Holiday Activities to Keep Your Spirits Shining Bright

December 2, 2022

Finish that project, plan that family dinner – there’s no shortage of things to do to fill our calendars with this time of year. Unfortunately, it can be easy to fill our calendars with “must-dos” instead of fun activities we want to do.

Research has found that being around people that lift our spirits and spending time outdoors can boost feelings of wellbeing, and we know that vitamin D is always a happiness booster. So clear your calendars and make space for some of these fun activities with those closest to you:

Get a Christmas Tree

Round up the kids, get the dog, and go pick out a real Christmas tree! Whether you bring an ax and chop it down yourself, or head to a tree farm and pick a pre-cut one, getting out for some fresh air and participating in a fun activity with the family can boost your happiness and take some stress away. Then when you get home, make some hot chocolate for the kiddos and maybe pour a Baileys for yourself, and have fun decorating the tree together. We can’t think of a better way to kick off the holiday season.

Go to a German Christmas Market

Towns in Germany have for centuries been hosting Christkindlmarkts and now German Christmas Markets appear in locations around the world! You don’t want to miss this opportunity for an authentic bratwurst and glass of gluhwein while you browse. Traditional foods like breads, sausage, and flammkuchen will be surrounded by ornaments, unique gifts for the family, and more. Whether you’re going to shop or just to browse, a German Christmas Market is always a fun adventure.

Decorate a Gingerbread House

Decorating a gingerbread house is a fun family activity that kids of most ages can partake in. Get out the icing and gumdrops and let their imaginations run wild. As a bonus, decorating gingerbread houses is fun for adults, too.

Try Snowshoeing

Whether you choose to go alone and enjoy some time to yourself or head out with family and friends, snowshoeing is a great activity almost anyone can participate in. It can be hard to get outside in the winter months when it’s cold, but the fresh air and vitamin D is so good for your overall wellbeing. Many cross-country ski lodges rent snowshoes.

Drive to See Holiday Lights

Once the sun has gone down and lights have been turned on, go for a drive to see some holiday light displays! Some neighbourhoods will have light shows, and you can be sure each house will have a dazzling display to wow the inner-kid in you.

It’s a busy season, and it can be easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle and let stress begin creeping in. It’s important to take time for yourself and to make sure you enjoy this time of year, too.
